Your Landscape can Help Local Bird Populations Survive the Winter

If you like the idea of providing food for the birds that spend their winters with us, adding some of their favorite plants to your landscape will provide food for them during a time when food sources are scarce. Just remember (especially with perennials) not to clip off the seed heads or fruits at the end of the season so the birds can feed on them over the winter.

Here are some landscape plants that will provide interest for your landscape and nourishment for the birds:

BeautyBerry

Trees and Shrubs with Berries

Hawthorn
Crabapple
Redtwig Dogwood
Viburnum
Holly
Sumac
Roses
Bayberry
Oregon Grape Holly
Beautyberry
Pyracantha (Firethorn)
Cotoneaster
Juniper

Bee Balm (Monarda)

Perennials and Annuals with Seed

Bee Balm (Monarda)
Purple Coneflower (Echinacea)
Aster
Coreopsis
Joe-pye Weed (Eupatorium)
Liatris
Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia)
Ornamental Grasses
Sunflower
Cosmos
Cleome
Snapdragon

You can also help birds survive the winter by providing shelter. Evergreen trees and shrubs are a great haven for winter protection from the elements.

If possible, provide a fresh water source for overwintering birds.

Bird watching is fun and educational, and if your landscape includes plants that give them food and shelter the birds will be glad to give you entertainment in return.
